What Is Dimpleplasty?

Dimpleplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at creating dimples on the cheeks or chin. Dimples are indentations that occur when some people smile and are often viewed as a sign of beauty or good luck in various cultures. Not everyone is born with dimples, and they may also result from injury.

How Do I Prepare?

To prepare for dimpleplasty, follow these steps:

  • Find an Experienced Surgeon: Look for a reputable facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist trained in dimpleplasty.
  • Initial Consultation: Discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with your surgeon. They will assess your suitability for surgery and determine the ideal placement of the dimples.

Surgical Steps

Dimpleplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis and involves the following steps:

  • Local Anesthesia: A topical anesthetic like lidocaine is applied to numb the area and minimize discomfort. It takes about 10 minutes to take effect.
  • Creating the Dimple: The surgeon uses a small biopsy instrument to make a hole in the skin and removes a small amount of muscle and fat to form the dimple. The incision is about 2 to 3 millimeters long.
  • Placing the Suture: A suture (sling) is positioned from one side of the cheek muscle to the other and tied to set the dimple in place permanently.

Recovery Timeline

Recovery from dimpleplasty is generally straightforward:

  • Post-Procedure: You can usually go home immediately after the surgery. Mild swelling is common and can be reduced with cold packs. Swelling typically resolves within a few days.
  • Returning to Activities: Most people can resume work, school, and other activities within two days.
  • Follow-Up: Your surgeon will likely schedule a follow-up appointment a couple of weeks after the procedure to assess the results.
